The ElOculista - Vision project arose from the need to have a portable visual acuity taking system. And this in order to be able to care for patients who could not move from their home. Nowadays, with the monitors that exist, it can be perfectly used for consultation.

With the ElOculista - Consulta project I initially tried to create a program that could streamline those calculations that could be useful in ophthalmology, mainly in refraction. The possibility of notating the refractive error in different formats ended up leading to the complex problem of astigmatism. I needed to understand vector notation and its importance in the study of postsurgical astigmatism. The solution to the use of prisms has been included, both the orthogonal and oblique coupling and the way to achieve a certain prismatic effect by decentrating the lenses of the glasses.

Once that first objective had been achieved and given the importance of cataract surgery, I set myself the challenge of capturing the different formulas used to calculate the power of intraocular lenses. Obtaining the original formulas and implementing them has been quite difficult, as well as addressing the complex problem of refractive surprise and that of patients undergoing refractive surgery. All formulas have been tested hundreds of times against the results with the Holladay-Consultant program.

When I had already developed the refractive, lens, glaucoma and visual acuity section, I considered expanding the project so that it would be valid in an ophthalmology consultation. So a database engine was required ... I chose sqlite3 primarily for its simplicity and because it is a local database.

All the necessary elements are found to manage an ophthalmology consultation from an administrative and medical point of view.

The ElOculista - Hess-Lancaster project suggested given the near impossibility of obtaining this test in its original format. It has opted for the digital format and is currently under development.
